The Asthma Burden project built upon the existing occupational asthma surveillance scheme in Victoria (SABRE), using the collected information to better define the health, social and financial burden to the Victorian community from this condition.
In addition, a comprehensive critique of the SABRE scheme was conducted by an international expert in this field, Prof Jon Ayres from the University of Aberdeen. An in-depth analysis of the data collected over the first five years of the SABRE scheme, focus groups and key informant interviews were undertaken, in order to identify high risk areas to be targeted for prevention.
