Capacity BuildingPhD Scholarship OpportunitiesAustralian Firefighters Health StudyThe Australian Firefighters’ Health Study aims to assess the mortality and cancer incidence of career and volunteer firefighters. There is evidence that firefighters are more likely than the general population to contract cancer. A PhD research program will be developed within the study based on the candidate’s own background and research interests. A major component of the study will be data linkage and within cohort comparisons of risk based on exposure metrics. These metrics of exposure will be developed based on prospectively collected data, information from firefighter agencies and firefighters and the literature. Other areas of research include how to address confounding exposures such as smoking, how to account for other occupations among the volunteer firefighters and consideration of the Healthy Worker Effect including selection bias in the recruitment of career firefighters. Work and HealthA PhD research program, broadly based on understanding the relationships between working conditions and health-related outcomes, will be developed based on the candidate’s own background and research interests. Specific areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, research related to work injury in Victoria or return to work after work injury or illness using administrative workers’ compensation data. Other investigations focused on the relationship between working conditions/exposures and health-related outcomes using secondary data (either from labour market and health interviews or administrative data) would also be suitable.
